Cheryl McGannon

September 30, 2019

Cheryl McGannon is Sunshine Coast-based artist, having resided in Brisbane and then Townsville until 2007. She held the position of senior art lecturer at The Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE from 1990 to 2005. She continued her art education in North Queensland, at James Cook University. Cheryl, as she sees it now, was influenced by artists; Ron McBurnie, Margaret Wilson; Anne Lord; Judy Watson; and Tate Adams, all renowned Australian artists.

Her childhood was spent surrounded by the open plains of western New South Wales.  Over the last ten years however, Cheryl’s painting and workshop classes has occupied an increasing larger part of her life, and her distinctive style has developed exponentially. During 2015 she was introduced to cold wax medium oils and pigments.  After travelling to Italy and undertaking one of Rebecca’ Crowell’s workshops, she was seduced by this medium.  She is now working almost exclusively with wax, both hot and cold.

Her works have been acquired by appreciative collectors and art collectors within Australia and overseas.  Her works are represented in office spaces and private homes through commissions or acquired through more recent Melbourne and Brisbane-based exhibitions. She is the recipient of numerous art awards and runs workshops from her studio on the Sunshine Coast.

Cheryl’s colour palette is varied. Her technique is subtle and considered, whilst being balanced with line, shape, texture and form to bring about her distinctive style.
